About the Soul

The Origin of Our Soul

People have always wondered about the existence of the soul. The Bible explains that our souls (or our spirit) endure beyond our time on Earth, continuing in the eternal, spiritual realm. All people are a combination of the body and the spirit (Ge 2:7). The distinction between the body and spirit are evident when someone dies.

“... when the mourners will weep at your funeral. … the dust will return to the earth, and the spirit will return to God who gave it.”

The Bible clarifies that our souls will return to God, who dwells in heaven (Ecc 5:2). When we die, and our soul separates from our body, it will return to God, who dwells in heaven. Contrary to the belief that the soul dies with the body, this verse affirms that our soul continues to exist eternally in the spiritual world. Jesus Christ reiterates this teaching.

“‘Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.’”

Our soul continues to live after our body dies. This signifies that we have a spiritual life. So, the death of our body is different than the death of our soul. While on Earth, God gives us the opportunity to prepare for our future in the spiritual world.

“For you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

Our life on Earth is our opportunity to prepare for our future. Jesus Christ teaches us that through His body and blood, we can receive eternal life and return to the kingdom of heaven.
