On Sunday, June 9, 41 ASEZ WAO volunteers dedicated their morning to cleaning up Kaiser Park in honor of World Ocean Day. This effort was also part of the ASEZ WAO Blue Ocean initiative, which focuses on marine ecosystem protection by cleaning streams, rivers, beaches, and seas. The volunteers from Brooklyn partnered with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation to help restore the park and beach.
ASEZ WAO Supports World Ocean Day
World Ocean Day, held annually on June 8 and recognized by the United Nations since 2008, inspires collective action for a healthy ocean and stable climate. For this reason, volunteers directed their efforts towards Kaiser Park in Coney Island, a 26-acre community park recognized for its fishing pier and scenic views of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. They collected many bags of trash and debris, focusing on removing microplastics harmful to marine life and the food chain.
ASEZ WAO Receives Awards for Environmental Leadership
Their hard work was quickly recognized by locals and officials. ASEZ WAO received a Certificate of Recognition from the office of New York State Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton. It states: “In recognition of your outstanding service to our great city and state, and for your great contributions to our community. A great state is only as great as those individuals who perform exemplary service on behalf of their community and contribute positively to that environment.”
Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny from the 46th Assembly District also presented a Citation from the New York State Assembly stating: “Our office applauds your volunteer services in taking action to clean the Coney Island Creek. Your efforts will bring about positive change to enhance the quality of life in the Coney Island Community.”
