On Sunday, April 28, 40 ASEZ volunteers actively cleaned up Amersfort Park in Brooklyn, NY for Earth Day and ASEZ’s Green Carbon campaign. The campaign aims to cut carbon emissions and protect land ecosystems. Teaming up with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, volunteers ensured the event’s success.
Amersfort Park, nestled in Brooklyn, offers a serene escape with its lush greenery, mature trees, and gentle slopes. It serves as a hub for peaceful gatherings and relaxation, drawing many students from nearby Brooklyn College. Local residents stopped by to appreciate the volunteers’ dedication to the community.
Residents Near Amersfort Park Show Their Appreciation
“I really appreciate you all taking the time to do this,” said a local resident. “It’s so good to see young ones coming out here to clean this park. These things matter to us more than you think.” The volunteers collected 63 bags of trash, leaves and debris.
Local news coverage was provided by News12 Brooklyn. “Partnerships for Parks is hugely grateful to ASEZ for their support in cleaning Amersfort Park for Earth Day,” said Adam, a volunteer coordinator for Partnership for Parks. “Their beautification efforts not only benefit Parks staff but the broader community by role-modeling the intrinsic importance of civic engagement.”
Students Tackle Climate Change Through Cleanups
“It feels great to be out here. You can visibly see that the neighbors are happy we’re here,” said Anjaniece an ASEZ volunteer and Brooklyn College student. “They’re all coming out to sit. Since the park is in a residential area, it’s a good place for the community to take their kids out to play and to walk their dogs. A cleaner park just makes you feel safer.”
The cleanup at Amersfort Park was just one piece of a bigger picture. Students actively organized events across various locations for the Green Carbon campaign, including Rochester; Syracuse; Cambridge, MA; Brockton, MA; Trinidad and Puerto Rico.
